Oof. That hasn't acted up in a while. Thanks, chest wound! Ow, ow, ow.

Chilled to the bone during weapons practice, hit repeatedly on each side of the neck, jabbed in the eye, bled from an open wound, punched in the ribs, and took many knee strikes to the gut.

All in all? A good training day. Now for some painkillers, rest, and get ready to do it again tomorrow. ‪

It's been a hell of a day for us.

First, let me start off by saying that I've passed by brown belt test for Tang Soo Do. It was a rough test from my perspective; not that it was intentionally more difficult than usual, but rather I felt that my performance was notably sub-par. My fighting distinctly lacked my usual strong defense/counter-attack ability, leaving me open for more hits than normal. Forms were, in my opinion, lacking sharpness and detail. My knowledge and breaking techniques were pretty good, so I can take some solace in that. Despite my own criticisms, I was informed by everyone else (including the parents of the kids I teach) that the forms looked great and my fighting was solid. Maybe I'm being to critical of myself, maybe I'm just trying to hold myself up to a higher standard since I'm going for my second black belt. Anyway, it was a success, and I'll be posting links for pics and video from Flickr soon.

After the test, and just as I was about to unwind and go into a healing coma, I got a call informing me that a long-time acquaintance passed away today. She was battling a strep infection that spread to the rest of her organs, and the body simply shut down. Her husband and two children remain, and though I wasn't particularly close them, or her, I'm ready should they need me. It's humbling and depressing, but the reminder of our own mortality makes me appreciate what I have and what I've accomplished. I'll pour a libation for her tomorrow.

Right now, though, I'm absurdly tired, quite sore, and kinda down. Perhaps tomorrow after some work at the school I'll head out for the evening. I could stand to get out for while.

It is tradition in our school for a student to clean up their own blood after it has been spilled on the floor/carpet (for both sanitary and discipline issues.)

Today, I spent half an hour scrubbing my own blood stains out of the carpet.

I've had better days.

Ow, again.

Yesterday I managed to jab a sewing needle through my thumbnail. OW.

Clearly, I totally rolled a 1 on my sewing skill. I should probably dump more points into it when next I level up.

I've got a bruised heel, aching knees, sore thighs, swollen quad (from Juris' leg attack last night), and a bit of a pain in my left hip from trying to keep my balance while walking around with a quasi-Quasimodo-gimp-waddle at work. Yeah, I'm hobbling, but my near-lascivious love affair with Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen keep me functional.

In the meantime, my upper body is just fine, so off to work those muscles I go!

Managed to return to KF after the illness, knowing full well that some physical stimulation would get the endorphins running again and speed up the healing. No, I'm certainly not 100%, hell I'm not even 80%, but I could punch, kick, and run a bit which is at least something.

On Saturdays, classes begin mid-morning for the Kung Fu students with half an hour of weapons practice and one hour of regular class time.

You also probably know that I just don't do mornings.

Gah! My recollection of So Hyung is completely off, so I get to essentially retrain the whole thing. Sure, it has been 3 years since I did this regularly but this is just depressing. I normally wouldn't mind it so much, but coupled with my suddenly fragile knees I get to reconfigure my balance and weight transference all over again. This is going to take some time.

On the plus side, I beat Nick at arm bars tonight. Nick, being this literal bear of a man, has these meaty forearms which double as nice cushions for my (comparably) bony forearms. Sure, he's got TONS of power so I've got my fair share of bruises, but he didn't really have a chance.

I forgot that I had someone take some pics of my breaks. Just a few behind the cut.

It seems that after coming home in a drunken stupor from a fun night with [livejournal.com profile] musikub, I prepared my contact cleansing solution improperly; too much solution in the vial means that it takes longer to nutralize from the metal, which in turn means that I nearly scream in pain as I unknownlingly put what is essentially an active hydrogen peroxide covered contact lens into my eye.

Here I sit, eye, reddened and sore, annoying me into a cranky mood. Thus, I write about games I've played over the past few months in a series of cantankerous micro-criticisms which totally reflect my current state of being! I are angry troll! Rar!

Well, since I haven't gotten a response regarding who's taking over Movie Night, I'll take the wheel for a bit. This Sunday we're taking a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] zalena and watching Stanley Donen's 1967 Bedazzled. So there, that's taken care of.

Monday, the three of us went down to Denver to meet a couple of LJ'ers from Seattle, [livejournal.com profile] tdjohnson and [livejournal.com profile] rlegters, who were in town for a square dancing convention. These guys were great! Funny, brilliant, good natured, you name it. I hope that we get to meet them again at some point, 'cause they're awesome. They were even tolerant of a slightly loopy monkey hopped up on Vicodin. (Do you guys mind if I share the pics I took?)

Typing with a broken knuckle is hard.

Hurricane Mom is visiting, and this time it's her and Dad staying at a nearby aunt's place. Today, I got the rather sudden shock that they'd be present to watch our KF class, which Sa Bom Nim seemed far too happy to let me lead for the first half. The class was sitting for meditiation when Mom and Dad came in, and the rest of the class look at me and snicker. I hiss "FOCUS." at them, and that seemed to stifle the laughter for a few minutes. They were happy to see me working on something I love, and saw what a difference it's made in me. After class, we went back to my apartment, which Beemer and Greg had kindly cleaned up, and sat and talked for a bit. I miss them, but they seem to be doing okay, so it's all good.
